Raised outside of Butte in Southwestern Montana, he spent many years working for various ranches around Dillon, Butte, Wise River, Boulder and Glen, Montana, before joining the United States Air Force in 1976. He has been a Professional Photographer since 1986 when he moved back to Spokane from Germany and started a small studio photographing people and events. In 1986 Al won over 90 different awards from the U.S. Air Force for his photographic skills. In 1987 he was chosen to be one of the official photographers for the Spokane Grand Pree. Al photographed the 1988 Olympic Cycling Trials and created his award winning photo "Hard Driving". He was selected in January 1989 to be the lead photographer for the 1989 Washington State Centennial Games. Al chose to end his Air Force career in 1990 after 13 years to pursue his photography full time. He was a photographer for United Press International (UPI) and was the only independent photographer allowed to photograph the 1990 GoodWill Games in Spokane. Al now lives in Spokane, Washington with his wife of 33 years and his youngest of two sons.
Pro Rodeo Pix ® was born in December of 2005. Al wanted to separate his existing Portrait Studio, Cunningham Studio of Quality Photography, which he had owned and operated in the Spokane Valley since 1989 from his new rodeo photography business. In order to keep track of the sales and marketing it made sense to have a separate business website, hence Pro Rodeo Pix ® was born. The goal behind Pro Rodeo Pix ® was to create a website to showcase the photographic rodeo work of Al's. A place where others can come to view some of the outstanding images Al has created while capturing the glory of the American Cowboys and Cowgirls.
Al has had images published in Pro Rodeo Sports News, Women's Pro Rodeo News Magazine, Cowboys and Indians Magazine, Western Horseman, Humps N Horns, The Competitor News and Cowboy's Digest as well as many local and regional newspapers, publications, TV Stations and various rodeo websites.
Cowboys and Indians Magazine choose one of my 2008 photos of Trevor Brazile for a full page print in their December 2009 issue. The photo was taken during slack at Livingston, Montana on 01 July 2008. This was a great opportunity to showcase an awesome photo of Trevor. I am very thankful they choose my image for their article.
I would like to thank all of the PRCA Rodeo fans for honoring me by voting my photo of bullfighter Al Sandvold spinning Phess at the 2008 Arlee, Montana PRCA rodeo. Phess is owned by JS Rodeo Company of Vaughn, Montana. Jeff Marn is riding Phess in this photo.
I am very gratful to those of you who voted for my photo. I am truly honored my photo was chosen from all the great photos submitted by other awesome PRCA Professional Photographers.
